TOPAMAX® (topiramate) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of various types of epilepsy in adults and children over 2 years of age. It can also be used for the prevention of migraines in adults.TOPAMAX is not used to treat severe migraines that come on suddenly (acute). It is available as 25mg, 50 mg, 100mg and 200mg tablets, and 15mg and 25mg sprinkle capsules. WHEN NOT TO TAKE TOPAMAX: Do not take TOPAMAX if you have an allergy to it or to any of the ingredients in it. Please refer to the Consumer Medicine Information for a list of ingredients. SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects associated with the use of TOPAMAX include drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, unusual tiredness, irritability, slowing of thought processes, tingling and numbness of hands and feet, decrease in appetite or weight loss, itchy skin or skin rash, inability to sleep, headache, nose bleed, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, taste disturbance or loss of taste, decreased or lack of sweating, nervousness, disturbance in attention, memory impairment, slowing of the though process, abnormal behavior, expressive language disorder, balance disorder, co-ordination problems, unusual hair loss or thinning, abnormal frequent urination, decreased feeling or sensitivity, especially in the skin, fever, difficulty in speaking, depression, unusual mood changes and emergence of suicidal thoughts. Serious side effects include kidney stones, pain when passing urine and sudden changes in eyesight such as blurring or loss of vision or rapid uncontrollable movement of the eyes. PRECAUTIONS: Do not suddenly stop taking TOPAMAX without checking with your doctor. Before you start to take TOPAMAX, you must tell your doctor if you have or have ever had any medical conditions. In particular, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, are breastfeeding or wish to breastfeed, have or have ever had a personality disorder or mental illness, have or have ever had kidney stones, kidney disease or a family history of kidney stones, have or have ever had liver disease or have eye problems. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, including medicines you can buy without a prescription from a pharmacy, supermarket or health food store. Depression and rare thoughts of self harm may be associated with taking TOPAMAX. Drink plenty of water. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking TOPAMAX. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Do not use TOPAMAX to treat any other complaint unless your doctor says so and do not give this medication to anyone else to use.
